Miller Lite Payback

September 22nd, 2006

Speaking of rebates owed to me, guess what came in the mail today?

It was a little tense for a while there, but Miller Lite came through and delivered me a rebate check for $22.68, the cost of the meat I had purchased in “Miller Lite Buys Us Steak Dinner.” Thanks for the happy ending, Miller!

I still think it’s weird, but I’m noticing a trend in rebates offered by alcohol manufacturers that don’t require the purchase of their product. (Of course, I haven’t been buying alcohol very long, so that could be why.) I saw two on wine bottles last weekend - one for $3 back on a $7 cheese purchase and one for $3 on a $7 meat purchase. The rebates are just little pieces of paper hanging around the bottle necks. I took the meat one from Ravenswood and sent it with a receipt for pork bought the week before.

So that brings us to the ethical question… Is it wrong to take rebate slips off of bottles of wine and not buy the bottle? My vote is that it’s OK, only because otherwise the rebates wouldn’t be “No purchase required” as advertised.
