Let’s Talk 50-Cent Turkey
November 27th, 2006Yesterday we cooked an 11+ pound turkey that cost me exactly $.63, and this isn’t even the basically free after rebate turkey deal I mentioned last week.
When we returned from our Thanksgiving travels on Saturday, I sauntered over to Kroger to look for clearance turkeys. (Our Thanksgiving meal was chicken and lamb, so we weren’t “turkeyed-out.”) All the fresh turkeys had to be sold by 11/26 (Sunday), so I found a bin full of Shady Brook Farms birds marked at $.49 a pound. The smallest I found was 11.45 lbs, for a total of $5.61. A good price for a whole turkey, so I picked it up, did my shopping, and checked out.
The beauty of the bargain, however, is that Kroger was still offering its Thanksgiving promotion of $5 off all 10-14 pound turkeys (and $10 off larger ones). I had thought that had ended on Thanksgiving, but was mistaken…

My husband adopted Alton Brown’s brining method for preparing the turkey, which turned out moist and tasty, although there is so much meat I predict we’ll be sick of turkey sight/smell/taste by the end of the week.
The bargain principle is the same as with any holiday merchandise - When possible, hold out for the great “day after” clearance deals.
