Free Book Confidential

September 29th, 2006

A free book in-and-of-itself does not qualify for Gem of the Month. A free book I actually want? Now we’re talking!

(Plus, September is almost over and I haven’t found anything else to qualify.)

*I found this courtesy of Mir’s blog Want Not* The book is Anthony Bourdain’s newest: The Nasty Bits. For some reason, MSN and Amstel Light say they want to send it to me for free. (I have gotten more free stuff from alcohol companies….) The fine print is you have to be 21 and older, takes 6-8 weeks, valued at $24.95, promotion ends 3/18/07 or while supplies last.

If you aren’t familiar with Tony, proceed with caution. (Wikipedia article) Caustic and uncouth are two words that pop into my head, although Wikipedia terms “racy and hardcore” might be more accurate. Definitely irreverent. He smokes, drinks, and swears freely. Not really the person you want your kid to grow into. He can, however, be very witty and insightful into the restaurant business and life. He’s best known for the restaurant expose Kitchen Confidential. My husband started watching him long ago when he had a cooking show on Food Network, then we both tuned in when he did A Cook’s Tour, a Food Network travel show. Now you can see him on Travel Channel - No Reservations - more travel, less food. This free book is apparently a collection on pieces he has written, and pulls a lot from the No Reservations experiences.

If you love food and find that cheesy Emeril and cheerful Rachel Ray get on your nerves, you’ll probably dig Anthony Bourdain and The Nasty Bits.
